ASTR 103 – Course-Related Announcements
First Summer Session 2008

  • Final Exam Review Session: We will have a review for the final exam on Sunday, June 22nd at 5:00 pm in our usual lecture room; It should last about an hour.

  • Extra Labs: We have scheduled one extra lab meeting for each lab section. Attendance to the extra lab is not mandatory, but can be used to remove an absence, or replace a low grade. The schedule is: Section 1, Thursday, June 19, 10 am – 12 noon; Section 2, Friday, June 20, 2 – 4 pm. Because of possible scedule conflicts, students who would like to go to the extra lab can do so in the time slot for the other section, if that helps.

  • Test 1 Rescheduling: By popular demand, Test 1 has been moved from Wednesday, June 11th, to Thursday, June 12th, still starting at 8:00 am.

  • Lecture Rescheduling: After another vote in class, on Monday, June 9th, the new class makeup schedule is as follows (the Lectures page has again been updated to reflect this):
    (1) Mon, Jun 9 -OR- Tue, Jun 10, both 7:00-9:00 pm
    (2) Fri, Jun 13, 8:00-9:50 am (the usual lecture time)
    (3) Mon, Jun 16 -OR- Tue, Jun 17, both 7:00-9:00 pm
    (4) Fri, Jun 20, 8:00-9:50 am (the usual lecture time).

  • Lecture Rescheduling: As discussed in class, I will be away the week of June 2nd for important personal reasons. The labs will meet, so please keep attending your lab according to the usual schedule, but we will not meet in the mornigs for lectures until Monday the 9th. We will make up the four missed mornings during the two remaining weeks of class, according to the following schedule (see also the Lectures page):
    (1) Mon, Jun 9 -OR- Tue, Jun 10, both 7:00-9:00 pm
    (2) Wed, Jun 11 -OR- Thu, Jun 12, both 7:00-9:00 pm
    (3) Mon, Jun 16 -OR- Tue, Jun 17, both 7:00-9:00 pm
    (4) Wed, Jun 18 -OR- Thu, Jun 19, both 7:00-9:00 pm.
Notice that I will give each makeup lecture twice, so each student can choose which of the two days to attend. Also, the revised schedule includes two midterms rather than three.

  • Syllabus: I will go over the syllabus on the first day of class. After that day, students (including those who register for the course after the first day of classes) will be responsible for knowing what the course policies are.

  • What to Bring to the Lab: When you come to the lab, bring a calculator with you; the calculator should have a few keys for math functions, such as "Log" (a scientific calculator is the best, but it does not need to be fancy or expensive). You may not always need it, but what will be done in lab on a particular day depends in part on the weather, and cannot always be decided in advance, and TA's don't have enough calculators for everyone. You do not need to buy a lab manual.
