Spring 2023 – Guidelines for Project Reports and Presentations

Written Reports

  • Length: I expect the report to be about 4 pages long, preferrably not shorter: longer reports are OK, but not much longer, since it should be possible to cover the material in the time scheduled for the oral presentations.
  • Content: The report should be written at the graduate level, with the rest of the class as the intended audience. You may assume that the reader/listener is familiar with all concepts and techniques used in class, but you need to introduce all relevant definitions and concepts, even simple ones, not covered in the course.
    – The report must have an explicitly stated goal, a clear logical development, and conclusion.
    – You do not need to include full derivations, but do mention the logical steps leading to the results.
  • Format:
    – Headers on the first page must include Name, Course, Date, and Title.
    – The report cannot be a copy of the presentation slides.
    – The report must include explanations in complete sentences, and cannot be mostly equations.
  • References: Complete information on all references used must be included at the end.
  • Timeline: A final copy of the report must be submitted at least 3 days before the oral presentation.
  • Finally: Watch out for typos and check your syntax!

Oral Presentations

  • Format: The presentations will be given in class, either at the board or using the projector and a laptop. The latter delivery type is preferrable given the amount of time each student will have.
  • Length: Plan on giving a 20-minute talk with a few additional minutes for questions; It is important not to run over, so practice your timing by rehearsing the whole talk, with no shortcuts, one or more times.
  • Content: I will expect you to state the goal of the presentation at the beginning (not just what topic you will discuss, but what we will learn by listening to it), and to state the conclusion at the end. The body of the presentation should correspond to the content of the written report.
  • Delivery: Think about any mannerisms you may have, in your language or movements.
  • Evaluation: You will be evaluated on all of the points above.
