PHYS 213 – Fall 2006 – Section 2
Test Information and Review Material

  • Test 1: The test will include four conceptual questions (from chapters 1-4), and three 2-part problems (on chapters 1-3). As practice, see the Fall 2005 Test 1 (PDF file).

  • Test 2: The test will cover chapters 4-8. It will include four conceptual questions (one each on chapters 4+5, 6, 7 and 8) and three 2-part problems (roughly one each on chapters 4+5, 6, 7 or 8, but the solution of some problems may require using equations from more than one chapter).

At the review session on Thursday, October 26th, we went over the following:
Ch. 4: Equations to remember, problem 4-29, and suggested practice questions.
Ch. 5: Equations to remember, problem 5-10, and suggested practice problems.
    Ch. 5: Problem 5-48.
Ch. 6: Equations to remember, problem 6-30, and suggested practice problems.
Ch. 7: Equations to remember, problem 7-32, and suggested practice problems.
Ch. 8: Equations to remember, problem 8-62, and suggested practice problems.

As practice, you may use problems 6 and 7 of the previously posted Test 1 (PDF file) from last year, and last year's Test 2 (PDF file).

  • Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive, although more emphasis will be placed on the material we covered since Test 2. Checklists of concepts and equations for each chapter are posted here.

As practice, you may use last year's Test 3 and Final Exam (PDF files), and the part on heat and thermodyamics from last year's PHYS 214 Test 1 (last year those topics were covered in the Spring semester). All greyed-out questions and problems are on topics that we have not covered this semester, and will not be on the final exam.

There will be one question and one 1-part problem on each of the following topics (also listed are problems that were solved in the review session on Sunday):
    – Chapters 2/3: Translational kinematics (I solved a problem of the type of 3-58).
    – Chapters 4/5: Newton's laws and forces (I solved a problem of the type of 5-63).
    – Chapters 6/7: Work, energy and momentum (I solved a problem of the type of 6-87).
    – Chapters 8/9: Circular motion, rotation and gravity (I solved problem 8-28).
    – Chapters 10: Fluids (I solved problem 10-42).
    – Chapters 11: Temperature and heat (I solved problem 11-44).
    – Chapters 12: Kinetic theory and thermodynamics (I solved problem 12-23).
    – Chapters 13: Oscillations (I started solving problem 13-45, but made a sign mistake and did not get the same answer as in the book for part a; the answer in the book is correct).
