Homework Policies


Online Homework: The purpose of the online homework assignments is for students to practice applying the concepts discussed in the chapter to a variety of questions and problems.

Paper Homework: There will be one or two assignments per chapter to be done on paper. The purpose of the paper assignment is for students to practice writing answers to questions and solutions to problems that are not just correct but also complete, well presented and organized, readable and understandable. Each written homework assignment will have one question and one problem, and will be graded based of the following points, all of which will be given equal weight:

Overall Assignment Checklist:
— Has been submitted.
— The paper is not torn, and if there are more than one page they are stapled together.
— The header information is complete (name + chapter number + other optional).
— The handwriting is readable.
— The overall look is not overly messy and full of erasures.

Question Checklist:
— The answer is correct.
— It is not too long (no more than six lines).
— It is complete and uses complete sentences, with no shortcuts.
— It mentions explicitly the relevant concepts, laws or equations from the chapter.
— There are no more than a couple of syntax, spelling or other English grammar errors.

Problem Checklist:
— Every equation introduced comes with a statement identifying it and justifying its use.
— Every new equation used is first written in its general form, in terms of symbols.
— All steps in every calculation are shown, in a logically correct order, and readable.
— Every number has the right number of significant digits, even 0.0 (the tolerance is ±1).
— All results are first given in terms of symbols (if applicable), then numerically.
— All numerical results include the appropriate units.
— All explanations in words are readable and there are not too many English errors.
— There are no calculational mistakes.
— There are no conceptual mistakes.
— The solution is complete.
