Past Exploration (Space Exploration and overview pages)

  • Galileo: NASA mission launched in Oct 1989; In orbit around Jupiter and its moons from Dec 1995 to Sep 2003, when the spacecraft entered and burned up in Jupiter's atmosphere.
  • Europa Orbiter: Originally developed for launch in 2008, and scheduled to orbit Europa in 2010-2012; Has now been shelved.
  • Pioneer 10 and 11: 1973-74, now leaving the solar system carrying a plaque.
  • Voyager 1 and 2: 1979, also now leaving the solar system.
  • Ulysses spacecraft flyby, while on its way to the Sun.

Future Missions

  • JIMO: Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter, the first of NASA's upcoming fleet of nuclear-powered spacecraft with an ion drive; To be launched in 2011 at the earliest, will reach Jupiter 6-8 years later and orbit, for several months each, the Jovian satellites Callisto, Ganymede and Europa.
