  • SETI Institute: A nonprofit corporation that serves as an institutional home for scientific and educational projects relevant to the nature, distribution, and prevalence of life in the universe.

Projects (For future interstellar missions, see Space)

  • Arecibo Message: Seti Institute page; APOD 2000.01.23 page.
  • Optical SETI Project: Beginning in October 1998, has been searching for intense laser pulses which might have been sent deliberately in our direction by civilizations in order to initiate communication across interstellar distances.
  • Project OZMA: Detecting radio signals from extraterrestrial sources (S&T article).
  • Project Phoenix: The world's most sensitive and comprehensive search for extraterrestrial intelligence, an effort to detect extraterrestrial civilizations by listening for radio signals that are either being deliberately beamed our way, or are inadvertently transmitted from another planet.
  • SETI@home Project: Based at the University of California, Berkeley, analyzes data from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico (BBC news story, Planetary Society page).
