- SWAS
(Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite): A NASA Small Explorer
Project designed to study the chemical composition of interstellar
gas clouds, launched into low Earth orbit on December 05, 1998.
The primary objective of SWAS is to survey water, molecular oxygen,
carbon, and isotopic carbon monoxide emission in a variety of
galactic star forming regions. The SWAS Science Operations Center
is located at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- WIRE
(Wide-Field Infrared Explorer): A past NASA mission, whose
objective was to answer three questions: (1) What fraction of
the luminosity of the universe at redshifts of 0.5 and beyond
is due to starburst galaxies? (2) How fast and in what ways are
starburst galaxies evolving? (3) Are luminous protogalaxies common
at redshifts less than 3?
