12/12-- Well, here they are - you can look up your exam score and final grade on this page.  (you'll need your class ID code).

In general many people did well on the final.  I decided to throw out the cylinder problem as no one got it right.

12/4--Here are the solutions for Test 3 and here are the answers to Test3B multiple choice.

Just a note that I will be having regular office hours on Monday 2-3 in Lewis.

Also, there will be a review session Tuesday evening at 7:30 in Lewis 109.
12/3--I have finished grading Test #3 and compiled your grades going into the exam.  You can look them up here using your class ID number I emailed to you.

 Make note of the assumptions:
1. You will to the Extra Credit (see below) and
2. I used your test average as your final exam grade.  

The projected grade can go up if you study hard for the exam.

All your recorded grades are listed, if some grades to not look right to you, make sure to let me know.
12/312/10The extra credit system is now up and running.  The link below will take you to a login page to get you started.  You'll need to fill in your first and last name and your UM ID number (starting with a 1).  If your number checks out, you'll get a little welcome page with a link to the main page.

Make SURE to read and follow the instructions on that page!  You must spend a total of at least 3 hours with the simulations, not all at one sitting.  You MUST click the "Log Me Out" link and fill in your info so the system can record how much time you have spent so far.  It will NOT report back to you how much time you've spent - keep track of that yourself.

Let me know if you have problems logging in or questions.

11/25--Here are the solutions to the Chap. 11&12 HW.

Don't forget we are having Test #3 on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving break.  You may bring a 3x5" card as usual.  The test will be of the same format as the past two.
11/17--I have now posted Conceptual Question slides from Chap. 11 and Chap. 12.  We did NOT cover all sections in these chapters (see below), so some questions will not be applicable. Also, these files are password protected so look at your email for the password.

Check back here for solutions to the Chap. 11&12 HW on Wed. morning.

I will be holding a review session Wed. evening from 6:30 - 7:30 in Lewis 109 and Test #3 will be on Thursday.
11/1311/18I have posted a HW for Chap. 11&12 on Mastering Physics.  It will be due on Tues. Nov. 18.  

Don't forget that Test 3 on Chap. 8-12 is scheduled for next Thursday (11/20).  I will be holding a review session next week - day and time TBA.  Here are some sections in Chap. 11 and 12 you can skip: 11.9-10 and 11.14-16 and 12.2-3, 12.5, and 12.8-9.

Ch. 11: 11/18		Here are the solutions for Test2.  Make sure you UNDERSTAND everything you missed and get help if you don't.  You can also see a distribution of grades here.

Don't forget I will be out of town next week, but you will be having lectures.  You should now be reading Chap. 11 now.  You can skip 11.10, 11.14-16. And start reading Chap. 12 next week.

I have posted HW for Chap. 11 on Mastering Physics.  It will be available 11/10 and due 11/18.  Don't forget the HW for Chap. 9&10 is due Tuesday 11/11.

10/15--OK, I got the web file snaffu fixed up.  Your class codes are fine, now everyones grades should be posted on the midterm grade sheet.
10/1510/21I have posted your midterm grades which are calculated by weighting the HW average by 34% and Test 1 by 66% (no HW score was dropped).  You can look them up here by your secret class code which you should have recently received from me in an email.  You can refer to the syllabus to see where your average falls in the letter grade break points.

I have also posted a HW for linear momentum (Chap. 7) which will be due Tuesday 10/21.

I have also posted solutions for HW05_ch6 and HW04_ch5.

10/7--Study Tips for Success in Physics 213
  • You MUST be reading and rereading the book!  I do not have time in lecture to go over all the fine points on a particular topic.
  • As you read, keep a running list of questions that come up - write them down!  Then get them answered as quickly as possible either by me or in the Physics Tutoring center or by someone who knows what they are talking about.
  • Work problems in the back of the chapter that are similar to those assigned for HW.  The answers to odd numbers are in the back of the book so you can check your answers.  Try these without looking at notes or the chapter to "simulate" a real test.
10/310/8Here are the solutions for Test 1 (see final page for MC answers for version page).  Make SURE you understand each and every problem and seek help from me or  elsewhere until you do understand.  You can also view the grade distribution.

By the way, the extra 2 points on each of your tests was because I felt one of the MC questions wasn;t worded very well and so gave everyone the points to compensate.

I have posted a HW for Chap. 5 on MasteringPhysics.  It is due by Wed. 10/8 at 10:00 PM.
9/29--Reminders:
Test #1 is tomorrow
  • on Chap. 1-4
  • about 15 multiple choice and 4 problems
  • you must bring a calculator and pencils
  • you can bring a 3x5 notecard front and back with anything on it

We will be having a review session Mon. from 3-4:30 in Lewis 109.

To maximize your time for the test, TRY to get to class a few minutes early so you can start right at 9:30!

9/24--Some of you have asked for extra practice on concepts and problems.  I have complied about 20 practice questions and problems on MasteringPhysics to help you prepare for Test 1.  These will not count in any way toward your grade.

I will hold a review session Monday 9/29 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM.  I'm still working on the location.  Also a reminder that I have office hours Monday 2:00 - 3:00 in Lewis 211.
9/22--A reminder that there will be a Recitation Session  tonight (9/22) in Lewis 109 from 6:30 - 7:30.

I have fixed the due date on the  HW03 assignment (which is 9/23 at 11:00 pm).

Another reminder that I will be havinig Office Hours today from 2:00 - 3:00 in Lewis 211.
9/189/23I have posted HW03 on Mastering Physics.  The due date is the evening of 9/23 (Tuesday).  I suggest that you NOT wait until the day before to get started on it so you have time to seek help if you need it.

Other notes:
1. I have decided to postpone Test 1 until Tues 9/30 because of the debate madness.  It will cover the same amount of material (Chap. 1-4)  and we will still be having class on Thurs. 9/23.

2. About the grading of your HW01 - I only took a careful look at problem #36 and just scanned the rest of the problems.  You essentially got 50% for putting forth a good faith effort on all the problems and 50% for doing 36 correctly.  If you have questions, let me know.

3. I will be having a recitation session next Monday evening (9/22) from 7:30 - 8:30 in Lewis 109.  I will just be working some problems and taking questions.  You are not required to attend.
9/15--Here are the solutions for HW01 (on Chap. 1&2) and HW02 (on Chap. 3).  

I have made a few tutorials on Newton's Laws available to you on the Mastering Physics site.  You are not required to do these and they will not be graded, just some extra practice.

You should be reading Chap. 4 now - I will be assigning graded HW on Chap. 4 in a few days.

I'd also suggest doing the Intruduction to Mastering Physics tutorial (it does not count toward your grade).  I have left it available for the whole semester, so you can go back to it.
 
9/2--I will start using the clickers next week, so make sure to get yours (new or used, but make sure to get the right model - the PRS-RF).  Take a look at my "Resources" page for a link to the general clicker page with instructions.

I am making some progress with the on-line HW system and should be getting you codes soon.

At this point, you should have read Chap. 2.  We will begin Chap. 3 on Thursday.
8/289/4Since we do not have the on-line HW system set up yet, please work HW01 out on paper and turn it in at the beginning of class on Thursday 9/4.  The problems are:

Chap. 1: 2,8,16,18, 22
Chap. 2: 7, 9 11, 18, 22, 26, 33, 36, 37, 42

I included a few question from Chap. 1 on significant figures and unit conversion.  You should be able to solve most of these problems pretty quickly.  The last two are a bit more challenging.
8/268/28For those of you who did not get an Algebra Review sheet, you can download it here.  It is due in class on Thursday 8/28.

A reminder - if any of you only need Physics 213 (and not Physics 214), 213 will be offered in the Spring.  Please consider dropping it this fall and taking it in the spring to make room for those who need both semesters - it's good karma!

Don't forget to read Chap.1.  We will begin Chap. 2 on Thursday.

I have posted a useful guide to solving physics problems written by an instructor for this course a few years ago.  It is a bit "tongue in cheek", but is very helpful.  We will not be turning in written problem sets,  but I STRONGLY encourage you to work your solutions as described in this guide during homework because it is the kind of thing I will be looking for in your written test solutions.  Feel free to contact me with questions, or bring your written out HW solutions for me to look over durng office hours.

Another good source of help is the Physics Tutoring Center which is just across the hall from our classroom.  There is a graduate student or professor in there many hours of the day to help students with problems (but NOT solve them for you!)  There is a specific schedule posted on the door.

Welcome to Physics 213 with Dr. Gladden!
This is the page to which you should refer most often.  It is where I will post homework assignments, make announcements, post test scores and distributions, and will be my primary mode of communication with you (other than lectures of course!).  Make sure to take a good look at the course syllabus (html, pdf) and let me know if there is anything you do  not understand.  The lecture schedule will be posted here shortly - make sure to mark test days on your calender.
