11/1311/16Here are the solutions for Test 2.  Make sure you understand everything you got wrong and seek help if you need it.
A few other notes:
  • I have decided to drop Chap. 14 on Heat for this semester to devote more time to vibration and waves.
  • Our Test 3 has been pushed back by class consensus to the week after Thanksgiving.  We will have it on Tuesday evening (12/1) from 7:00 - 9:00 in Lewis 109 (our class room).
  • Test 3 will cover Chap. 9-12 and will be the same format you are used to by now.  You do get a 3x5" notecard.
  • We skipped a number of sections in a few chapters, so here is the list of sections you will NOT be responsible for:
    • 9.5 - 9.7
    • 10.11 - 10.14
    • 11.10, 11.14 - 11.16
    • 12.8 - 12.9
  • After Thanksgiving I will set up the PhET extra credit system and explain it to you.
11/211/6I have graded Test 2.  The average was almost exactly that of Test 1: 79.3.  You can look your score up in this table with your class ID.  I'll hand them back in class on Wed. and make some comments.

I encourage you to see me if your score went down or is not where you want it to be.  I do not bite and may be able to improve your final score!

Also, I have posted HW for Chap. 9 & 10 which is due on Friday evening by 11:00 pm.  Since we only did parts of each of these chapters, I decided to combine them.
10/210/7I have posted the solutions for Test 1.  Make sure you understand each questions and see me if you have questions.  I have also posted your HW and Test 1 grades and the current average.  I sent an email to you with a secret class code that you will need to look up your scores.

A new HW will soon be posted on Mastering Physics and will be due next Wed. evening (10/7).
9/24 -- Test #1 on Chap. 1-4 will be on Tuesday evening 9/29 starting at 7:15 pm in Lewis 109. Here's what you should have with you:
  • pencils
  • calculator (make sure your batteries are fresh)
  • a 3x5" notecard with anything you want on it (front and back)
  • a well rested brain

There will be a review session on Sunday 9/27 from 7-8 pm in Lewis 109. If you can't make it then, I'll be around all day Monday and Tuesday if you have questions - just email me.

I am also posting solutions for the relavent homeworks. These are available to you anytime from the MasteringPhysics website after the assignment due date, but I thought I'd post them here as well.

Don't forget to keep up with your Chap. 5 reading! We will be starting Chap. 6 on Friday.

9/17 9/23 I have posted Chap. 4 HW on Mastering Physics. The most challenging problem I set for extra credit ;) It will be due next Wed. evening. MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

We will also need to reschedule the test. As I said in class, I have come to the conclusion that 50 minutes is just not enough time for you to work through a test, so we'll schedule it for an evening. You will thank me not to have the time pressure. And I will cancel the class that follows the test. We will discuss this on Monday.

Here is the example problem I had planned to go through in class today. It is very similar to the example we did work out earlier in the week, so you should be OK. Let me know if you have difficulty with it.

I've had to adjust my office hours due to some scheduling changes. My new office hours are Wed. 9-10 AM and Fri. 9-10:45, both in Kenon. If that conflicts with your schedule, you can always make an appointment to meet me in my 1062 NCPA office.

Make sure to get registered at MasteringPhysics and do the “Introductory” assignment (not for a grade).

I have posted a useful guide to solving physics problems written by an instructor for this course a few years ago.  It is a bit "tongue in cheek", but is very helpful.  We will not be turning in written problem sets,  but I STRONGLY encourage you to work your solutions as described in this guide during homework because it is the kind of thing I will be looking for in your written test solutions.  Feel free to contact me with questions, or bring your written out HW solutions for me to look over durng office hours.

Another good source of help is the Physics Tutoring Center which is just across the hall from our classroom.  There is a graduate student or professor in there many hours of the day to help students with problems (but NOT solve them for you!)  There is a specific schedule posted on the door.

Visit the "Course Resources" page to learn more about the on-line homework system, clickers, and other things that will help you be successful in this course.

If you only need Phys 213 (and not 214), please consider taking it in the Spring.  This will free up some seats for people waiting who need both courses!

Welcome to Physics 213 with Dr. Gladden!
This is the page to which you should refer most often.  It is where I will post homework assignments, make announcements, post test scores and distributions, and will be my primary mode of communication with you (other than lectures of course!).  Make sure to take a good look at the course syllabus and lecture schedule and let me know if there is anything you do  not understand.
