Future Exploration Missions

  • MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging): NASA mission launched in August 2004; Will fly past Venus three times and Mercury twice starting in 2008 before starting a (Earth) year-long orbital study of Mercury.
  • Bepi Colombo: ESA Cornerstone mission (previously called just Mercury Orbiter) to explore the planet Mercury, scheduled for launch in Jun 2011 in collaboration with Japan's ISAS; will reach Mercury after 2.5 years or more.
  • (An additional lander mission planned by ESA was cancelled in 2003.)
