- 05/02: Assignment 6:
Run Monte Carlo simulations of the 2D Ising model, using the Mathematica code
provided here (see the lecture notes page) or your own, and find the temperature
(more precisely, the value of J)
at which the phase transition occurs. Explain in detail your criteria for establishing
the result and what simulations you did. This assignment takes the place of
the final exam, and is due Thursday, May 8th.
- 04/27: Makeup Class:
After two date changes, the mekeup class is now scheduled for Friday, May

The third quiz, covering phonons, photons and non-ideal gases will be on Tuesday,
April 15th.

Reminder:
We will have a mekeup class this Friday, March 28th, from 9:00 to 9:50 in the

Halley, Chapter 3, Problems 1, 3 and 4. Due Tuesday, February 19th.
- 02/05: Assignment
2:
Halley, Chapter 2, Problems 1 and 2. Due Tuesday, February 12th.
- 01/28: Assignment 1:
Halley, Chapter 1, Problems 1 and 2, due Tuesday, February 5th. Notice that a
solution to problem 1 is included in an appendix to the textbook; I still think
it would be useful for you to work out and write down the solution, and I expect
you to not just copy the solution Halley gives, but to fill in any steps and
details that he might have omitted and can clarify the discussion.
- 01/21: Lecture Room:
We will meet for the lecture on Tuesday, January 22nd, in the Lewis Hall astronomy
lab, located directly below the main lecture room 101. The access is from the
parking lot behind Lewis Hall, and I will be there to open the door, which
is usually locked, at most 5 minutes before 11:00.
During that class, we will also discuss one possible other location for the
rest of the semester.
- 01/17: Class Schedule:
As discussed in class, we are changing the schedule for this semester
to TuTh 11:00–12:15; All regular lecture rooms in Lewis Hall are occupied
by other courses at that time, so we will have to choose some
other room.
- 01/16: Class Schedule:
We will have to choose some time slot for this course other than MWF 8:00–8:50,
the originally scheduled one, because at that time I have to teach another course.
As discussed at a short meeting today, we will meet for the first class on Thursday
at 9:30 in room 126, and then decide the schedule for the rest of the semester.
